SULMONA PRIZE 51º
In November 2024, I took part in the 51st edition of the Premio Sulmona, one of the historic events dedicated to contemporary art in Abruzzo. The exhibition took place from 9 to 30 November in different venues throughout the city of Sulmona, including the Polo Museale Civico-Diocesano di Santa Chiara, the Complesso Civico Museale della Santissima Annunziata and La Rotonda.
This edition, organised by Il Quadrivio, Circolo d’Arte e Cultura, was directed and curated by Ivan D’Alberto, an independent curator and art historian specialising in contemporary art. The 51st edition was titled To THINK – l’arte libera la mente, a reflection on thought and experience as fundamental elements of the artistic process. The project sought to bring the Premio’s fifty years of history into dialogue with a vision of the future, bringing together different generations and artistic languages, from painting and sculpture to photography, video art, installation and performance.
The edition was structured into four sections: Premio, Omaggio, Accademia and Territorio. The latter brought together spaces, galleries, foundations, collectives and cultural associations connected to the Abruzzo region, each represented by an artist. I participated representing Pubblica_LAB.
For this occasion, I presented two works from my project Dimensions, an investigation that begins with a seemingly simple question: what exists beyond what we can see?
The universe is an immense and mysterious space, full of forms, movements and phenomena that escape our everyday perception. My research begins precisely from this distance between the visible and the invisible and moves towards the subatomic universe, subtle energies, and the relationships that exist between matter, information and energy.
From this perspective, dimensions are not simply a matter of space. They can also be understood as different levels of perception and existence. Contemporary physics has opened up the possibility of imagining a reality far more complex than the one we directly experience, in which everything is connected through fields of energy and information.
For this reason, taking part in an edition of the Premio Sulmona dedicated to To THINK – l’arte libera la mente created a natural connection with my work. Thinking also means questioning what we take for granted, moving beyond the limits of our perception and opening ourselves to other ways of interpreting reality.
In Dimensions, the image thus becomes a kind of portal into the invisible. The works do not seek to literally represent other dimensions or parallel universes, but rather to open a space in which we can imagine them and question our place within that immense web of relationships connecting matter, energy, information and experience.
Being part of the Premio Sulmona was also an opportunity to present this research within a context dedicated to dialogue between different artistic languages and generations of contemporary art.
