TELLING MY STORY OF MOTHERHOOD
Noi Tuttə is a podcast created by Aurélie Di Prospero that gives a voice to single-parent families and to all those families that exist outside traditional models. It starts from an idea that I consider fundamental: there is not just one kind of family; there are families.
The podcast was created as a space for exchange and listening, but also as a place to question the structures and stereotypes that still shape the way we understand family.
Single motherhood exposes many of these contradictions. Raising a child alone means taking on an enormous amount of material, economic, emotional and educational responsibility that often remains invisible. It means carrying everyday life with little possibility of sharing the burden, constantly making decisions and, in many cases, doing so while working, seeking financial stability and trying to maintain a space of your own.
But it also means facing a society whose structures are still largely built around a particular family model. Institutions, workplaces, support networks and even everyday language continue to assume that raising children is a shared responsibility in ways that do not always correspond to the reality of many families.
This is why I believe projects like Noi Tuttə are important. Giving voice to these experiences does not simply mean telling different stories: it means making visible realities that are part of our society and questioning the conditions that make them more difficult. Listening to mothers and families who have built different ways of living helps dismantle stereotypes and opens a conversation about care, autonomy, shared responsibility, inequality and rights.
Aurélie invited me to take part and tell my story of single motherhood. My experience as a mother has been deeply connected to my personal journey: to the decisions I had to make, the difficulties I faced, moving between countries, and the need to build a life for myself and my son in circumstances that were not always easy.
The invitation meant much more to me than simply taking part in a podcast. Telling a story that is part of your own life, returning to certain moments and putting them into words in front of another person is a deeply emotional process. There are experiences that, over time, we learn to carry with us without talking about them very much. Looking at them again and putting them into words also means confronting emotions we may have thought were already far behind us.
Across the two episodes I took part in, Aurélie and I revisit different moments of my story: my experience as a mother, the difficulties of single motherhood, the decisions that shaped my path, and the ways in which these experiences have also influenced the person I am today.
It was an emotional challenge to tell my story in this way. Not because it is a story I do not want to tell, but because putting certain experiences into words means going through them again from a different place. At the same time, doing so within a project like Noi Tuttə helped me understand that a personal story can also become part of a much broader conversation.
Talking about single motherhood also means talking about autonomy, responsibility, support networks, vulnerability and the many ways in which people build their own families. It means questioning the idea that there is one correct family structure and recognising that families can be created and transformed in many different ways.
I am grateful to Aurélie for creating this space and for inviting me to be part of it. For me, these two episodes are also an opportunity to look at my own journey from another perspective and to share a part of my story that, although deeply personal, may resonate with many other people.
Here I share the two episodes of Noi Tuttə in which I took part.
